How to settle your child into nursery for the first time
The thought of putting your little one in nursery can be difficult, but like every new beginning there will always be mixed emotions. There will be excitement as well as well as tears. It’s absolutely normal to feel anxious about the adjustment period in a new environment. Sometimes we can overestimate a young child’s ability to cope with transitions and settle in and happily substitute a group of unfamiliar adults and children for their parents or main care giver. The lure of the toys doesn’t always compensate!
A few tips on how to settle your child into nursery:
Be positive about the change, as children can feel your emotional state
Become familiar with the setting before your actual start date, by visiting the Nursery on a few timee
Ask questions about what you would like to know and communicate your child’s needs and interests
Plan the settling in time with your child’s key person
Make sure you say goodbye to your child and let them know you will be coming back later
Children who have a positive start to their new environment are more likely to feel comfortable, relaxed and valued, feel good about themselves as learners and have a sense of belonging to the pre-school community.
